am a total amateur with logic, am trying to get my head round latch/write commands to fade in/out effects on a live recording using a seperate bus channel. i have been able to 'latch' the changes i want, but then when i go on to do this again on another region on the same track it seems to wipe the 'latch' on the channel i have already done. any ideas what i am doing wrong?

I'm not completely clear on what you're trying to do, but latch may be the wrong automation mode to use. Touch will not overwrite anything downstream and may solve your problem.

From your description it could be that you look at the track of interest but another track is selected and therefore the automation gets written on the other track. If this is not the case, there might be something wrong with the controller setup. How are you writing the automation? Which controller device?
