I have read somewhere that -18 = 0 vu in Logic 9 so my question is to leave plenty of head room in my gain staging should I keep things down around -30 then boost my louder parts to -18, or start at -18 and then boost? Thanks

Do you mean gain staging inside of Logic? There you keep your volumes at levels which don't force you constantly pulling everything down as the mix grows-

If you mean audio recording: For normal stuff I go around -12 dB RMS. For highly dynamic music -30 dB RMS in Logic is a good start. That's pretty low of course and fits to classical or experimental music for example.

Yes staging in Logic not audio.
    Thanks for the answer. Solved.
