Hello, all... My name is Jim Bordner, and I'm the owner and sole composer/producer at Gravity Music, where I make soundtracks for commercials, film and video games. I have been a MOTU loyalist for many years, and almost switched to Logic a couple of times in the past few years. This year, I am beginning the migration, and am just getting to know Logic 9. So far, I like everything I see, and expect Logic to fit my working style better that Digital Performer has... in addition to doing a much better job of handling VI's and integrating with the OS.

This forum looks like a great resource... thanks for being here!

Welcome Jim! I'm a MOTU defector and really enjoy Logic. I still keep up to date with DP (and pro tools)and use it for legacy projects but much prefer Logic for day to day work. I highly recommend watching any of the excellent tutorials out there such as the ones at lynda.com, groove3.com and macprovideo.com. They'll help answer most of your questions and then some. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads-up on the tutorials, Dave! Much obliged.

I already find a lot to like in Logic and haven't even produced a project with it yet. I can see leaving my last copy of DP on the drive for old projects... but maybe you know: is there a decent way to save a DP project and reopen it in Logic without losing TOO much info?

Export or save each audio track starting from measure 1, save a standard midi file, open standard midi file in logic first and then drag in all the audio tracks at once. Done. Or, save as omf and open that in logic.

I've never done the OMF thing... I'll be giving it a try.

Do I know your handle from MOTUNation? Man, even if I was deeply in love with DP, I don't know if I could handle that bunch much longer. :)

Welcome Jim and hope you learn loads here, as well as soon becoming one of our experts.

It's great that there are also other MOTU defectors. We longtime Logic users tend to think its intuitive but of course when you change from a different platform, things can appear the exact opposite at first.

Yeah, that's true, Pete... I just hit my first brick wall, 5 minutes in. Why the hell does the "stop" button not stop the sequence (which was in record), but make it jump back a bar or two bars or something and then continue playing/recording from that point? Same effect, whether using the buttons on my Tascam board, the space bar, or mouse-clicking the on-screen icon.

Also, is there a way to get my non-Apple U Instruments to show up in the media library? I figured out how to select one in the track, by clicking and holding, but it would be keen to have them in the searchable list.

I suppose I should be asking these questions in another forum. :)

    Yes, please do.

I think it works best to have a separate post for each question, with a summary of the Q in the subject line.
