    can this be done?

I have one of those scrunched-up bars in an intermediate editing stage where all I want is to copy the notes, but it's impossible to select them without also selecting the text and notation signs

Use the Logic Event List Editor and filter the events you do not like to show exept the note events.

my Event List Editor doesn't have a filter for meta events, such as chord symbols and text - how would you hide those?

    1. Click on the "Notes" tab to get all but notes.
    2. Activate all entries.
    3. Deselect the "Notes" tab.
    4. "Toggle selection" via the Edit menu.
(in Logic 9 it is called "Invert selection")
It's a speciality of Apple to think exactly in the other direction than we.
Fortunately we meet sometimes, somewhere ;)
