hello all, I was just wondering if one of you would tell me how the transformer can be set up in the Environment to change one port with a multi instrument into 16 independently numbered audio inst. MIDI channels?

    Hi David,

I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you want to do; but I _think_ this will get you what you seem to be looking for:

    1. Cable the output of your multi instrument into a Channel Splitter object that you can create from under the "New" menu in the Environment Window.

    2. Cable each of the 16 individual outputs of the Channel Splitter into a unique software instrument Channel Strip.

    3. Make sure the MIDI channel on each Software Instrument corresponds to the cable number it is being fed from the Channel Splitter.

I _think_ this answers what you are asking. Maybe if you can describe what you are trying to do in a bit more detail, the solution might point to a different direction.

Thanks Eli, I had posted something similar before and Peter Ostry[am I on the right forum here?] anyway on some forum he suggested using transformers to do the job, but as I sat thinking how to do it I thought "this doesn't need 16 transformers but a single channel splitter. So you have already helped a lot by confirming my suspicion.

You certainly deserve an explanation. I have made contact with a developer who wants to stay unknown for now. The app he and a companion made will remove the very obviously wrong MIDI notes and events that a Breath controller sends out ,well, continuously.

My Akai EWI4000 sends so much I use MIDI Monitor to keep track of which setting on the Akai have changed[the Akai has such sensitive settings that I must re configure the Instrument every 30 minutes, I think the moisture from blowing into the EWI may cause the 'pots' to move slightly, sometimes changing CC7 to Pitch wheel and when I see in MIDI Monitor that Pitch wheel is being sent instead of CC7 I have to stop and re configure the controller.

The new app only runs in Terminal for now-the developer will make universal binaries if the product attracts attention. The demo for it has the option of using the free simpleSynth or connecting the new app from Terminal to Logic. The demo has four tracks and I thought I could turn on an IAC driver and that would give me a Port 1 to send the 4 separate MIDI channels to Logic to use the much better sounding VSTi's there. This work will make me better at using Logic too.

Your idea of using the channel splitter is just what I thought, only you know how to do it and my searches in the HTML Help don't give good results. Many times I have read of a function in Logic and looked for it in the Manual's search and get nada. IAC use is surely explained some where but I never found it.

This is too long but your help deserves the explanation. I think I may activate only 4 of the 16 channels and leave the rest un connected and this will work for 4 audio inst. tracks, have I got it right? I have an account now at Groove 3 and could buy one of your videos, is there one that explains this kind of use for the IAC and the Environment?

    Hi David,

You can certainly use four of the channel splitters outputs and just leave the rest "dead". There's no problem with that.

In terms of IAC; if you cable the IAC port off of the Physical Input directly to the channel splitter and then to the instruments in use; that'll work fine for playback. But the breath controller won't get recorded, since it isn't reaching the Sequencer Input object on the Clicks and Ports layer.

So, maybe leave the Physical Input alone - with the sum output going to the Sequencer Input. That way everything coming in to Logic will get captured by Logic. And then just create a multi instrument as you originally suggested; cable that to the channel splitter, and then from there go to your individual audio instruments. The multi instrument sub channels will have to be what is assigned in the Arrange Window's track list. But it should work.

WRT the videos; I touch on the Environment in some of the Qwik Trix videos. But just for some specific routing objectives. It's a not a comprehensive overview of all the objects though, and doesn't deal with IAC. Although there's lots of other good stuff in there :D

Yes you are on the right forum, I vaguely remember the discussion about setting MIDI channels in the Environment. I don't remember that we talked about a Multi Instrument. However, Eli knows more about this issue. I did never use a Multi Instrument myself.

    You are welcome,

With all due respect, I'm not half the Environment expert that you are Peter. I just know my way around the basics.

I am very poor because My career went bust when I got a HIV+ diagnosis in 1990, the drugs are working but have terrible side effects which have caused me to become a 'Vegan' at first I was not sure I could do it, but the ready availability of fake meat products has made it work-in one year of a plant-based diet my blood tests showed a 75% drop in bad cholesterol and triglycerides. This diet is slowly being made acceptable in the US, it puts the whole sham of diet and Industrial meat production in a bad spot, but they are companies and the "free" market will provide another cow for them cardiologists to milk. So for now I can't buy any instruction videos that don't cover what I need-I wasted a lot of money on the MacProVideos- just at the moment he says do this he is blocking the view of the rest-which is what I need, I am a relic of the past and glad of it.

Eli, if I ever win the lotto I will get all your videos, but I refuse to be a slave to a metronome. To me real music has to breath and that requires tasteful pauses in the tempo,by tasteful I mean natural-NOT Pavarotti. He also demonstrated how chorusing and random tuning killed Music, we have no more dissonants to give release to and no need to in equally out of tune Temperament, if it's all false a 1-4-5-1 is no longer a final cadence so they must add a 7 to make it sound stylish, and the absence of real major and minor in tune[they aren't called pure thirds for nothing] means stacking dissonant chords to give depth and chord progressions that depend on an increase of dissonance to generate any feeling of progress since the text is misogynistic nonsense, fortunately mostly inaudible.

Sorry for the rant-remove it if it offends.

    Hi David,

So sorry to hear about your health problems. It seems almost irreverent to be discussing transformers and channel splitters. No worries about the rant.

Thanks Eli, actually many AIDS patients from age group55 and up have seen an improvement in our lives because we must live today-tomorrow doesn't exist, and we have lost yesterday, obviously if I had not been farting around Europe as a Baroque Bassoonist for 20 odd years earning less money than a cleaning lady and building up no pension and not having any right to a US retirement social security,I ended up at the point in 1990 that the diagnoses was made living in AMsterdam[great city back then] I got national Dutch health care which, being socialist based, was very cheap and sufficient. Now this place has elected the Dutch equivalent of Glenn Beck, and the party is over, even the DJ's only visit to have a smoke ,do a gig, and run for the next. That will all change as the country is lead down the garden path following the 'American Dream'-it resembles that South African film fragment of chickens sitting on a Python's back, they jump around when he eats one but still keep coming back. Like my posts do,and now I've done it again.
I know now at least that I am in the right forum, something I wouldn't say about a forum that shall have no name-as someone in this or another forum wrote"a place for exhibitionists to display their knowledge and lack of social skills". On a brighter note you guys have done such good work that I practiced 4 hours in Logic yesterday and everything worked,I didn't try yet to record in 9.1.2, but hope for the best.

This might sound ridiculous but if my posts continue to turn into rants or biographies we had better take it off the forum, on the other hand it will make lurkers aware they can safely ask a dumb question and not be told they are A&*%holes and should RTFM'S, or, my favorite-why do you stay up until 2AM to post? from a guy in Washington state. I had read that US schools had dumbed down the population but not realizing that the time zones make the difference is criminal, how can they have a hope of pleasant living if the level of education is so low-have you heard the "politicians"?

David, may I say that I very much admire your courage in talking about this on the forum, and I think we should be all flattered that you trust us so much to open your heart in this manner.

Just as a "FYI", we also have an off topic area, the LUG Lounge, where most anything can be discussed:

    kind regards

Hey, great! thanks for pointing me in that direction, brilliant, the LUG Lounge Lizards [sorry to show age but still admire "Gonzo Journalism"] in case you are so old you lived through that period, in which case I recommend sleep.
    kind regards[/QUOTE]
Wonderful to see the phrase used in it's correct place and intent. Thanks!
