    Hi ,
Noob about to start on the one true path so apologies in advance for any silly Q's . About to set up Logic Studio over Xmas for the 1st time and considering a few choices having just started reading manuals etc .

Hope to get an Apogee Duet in New Year but for now I will have an Apogee Gio and Studio installed over Garageband 11 on a 500gb Macbook Pro 2.8 with 8gbs RAM .

Considering installing extra Content and recordings to an external hard-drive . Is this a good idea and , if so , any suggestions of recommended drives ?

Is it better to set up for 64-bit from the off or could there be compatibility issues later on ?

Any other tips or suggestions or good online guides ?

    Thanks ,

    ~M~

I'd not recommend it as you'll be limited w playback and the library search and recall functions would be really laggy. Say you want more than a few loops playing at once. That'll pretty much clog your USB or FW cable. Same reason I/O systems have historically been limited to 16 tracks at 96khz. Thats why they sell those really expensive HD cards. It's do-able but not a good idea. Unless of course youre using something like a Seta or ATA line between em. If HD space is an issue, you'll just have to delete what you don't use or move your 100000 file MP3 library to the external hd ;)

Thinking about this ,although I'd bought an Iomega 2tb Mac drive I may just use this for backing up Macbook and storing music .

So if I just run the installer again and re-load Content files on to the laptop I should be good to get started ??

Actually, I'd consider recording to/from an external hard drive as long as it's 7200 RPM. The fastest through port would be an eSATA card. Not sure if your laptop has one - some (or all?) newer ones don't.

You could move content, but I'd recommend ONLY Apple loops or you'll screw up your system. You don't need to re-install. You can move them and re-index by dragging folder(s) onto Loop Browser. I've had a completely different experience than what FUBARd says - no problem running as many loops as I've needed from an external drive. I must not have done enough to push the system, apparently.

Logic shares GB's Apple loops files so having both on a drive won't increase loop storage space.

Probably the fastest system would be 2 external drives, one for recording, one for Loops and sample libraries. Make sure they have their own bus. It's possible to buy an eSATA card with two busses. You could also go one eSATA and one Firewire 800 (the duet will need this if you buy one...).

And for what it's worth, if it aint broke, don't fix it. You can make these decisions as needed, if needed. Oh, and no problem toggling from 32 bit to 64 bit - I do it regularly in Logic.

Very interesting Doug . I have already reinstalled back onto the laptop so , when I get a good microphone and start recording properly I may use the ( Firewire ) Iomega 2tb hard Drive to record to for now . I'm sure I've seen an Expresscard to eSata/Firewire adaptor somewhere if I do decide to get another HD . That seems 'logical' to me as I have to connect a ' Gio' ( Usb ) , Duet with or without microphone and routing to Hifi for monitoring ( Firewire ) , Iomega eventually ( also Firewire ) and then another HD .

Thats for another day , first up is curing the red Led clipping indicator on the Duet when using iTunes

    Best

Good luck on all this. Please feel free to report what your experience is, I'd be curious.
